Woman, Life, Freedom movement of Iran — beginning in September 2022 — took the world by surprise.
It began when a young woman, detained for improper head covering, was beaten and later died in custody. The social tension at that moment was so intense that the entire country rose in protest, led by the women of Iran. The women of Iran showed both the world—and themselves—their extraordinary courage and strength. The movement has continued in various forms ever since, and it has permanently transformed the nation’s narrative.
Instead of coming up with ideas myself—as a member of the diaspora who has lived in the United States for many years and cannot fully grasp the depth of the crimes committed by the ruling regime—I chose to borrow real images and slogans from the streets of Iran to portray the Woman, Life, Freedom movement both inside and outside a school bus. The goal of the project was simple: to show solidarity with the people of Iran.
When the bus toured the streets of the Washington, D.C. metro area, Farsi-language media outlets such as Voice of America, BBC Persian, and others covered the exhibit and interviewed spectators. The resulting broadcasts reached audiences inside Iran, where hundreds of thousands of Iranians witnessed the project and its message of support.
